You’ve packed your bags, loaded up the car, had 3 service station stops, and have arrived in Keswick ready to start adventuring up the fells… and been greeted by typical Lake District weather. “Okay,” you think to yourself, “I planned for this! I’ve got my waterproof jacket and waking boots…” but after 3 days of walking in the rain, you fancy a break from the elements, and want so spend a day indoors. Whilst your self-catering cottage is wonderfully cosy, though, it’s not where you want to spend 24 hours. But what is there to do in a place so geared up for the great outdoors?!

Don’t worry, I’ve taken the guesswork out of it, and put together a comprehensive list of indoor fun in Keswick!

KONG is an adventure facility that offers both indoor and outdoor fun. Their indoor climbing centre is based within their shop, just outside the centre of Keswick (the 15-foot gorilla standing outside makes it hard to miss!) They offer a variety of services, from a children’s play area, to private climbing lessons, and they even boast an escape room!

Keswick Climbing Wall – part of the Newlands Adventure Centre - must be the most picturesquely located indoor climbing facility in the UK. Based by Castlerigg Stone Circle, this facility comprises a great selection of top rope walls, as well as a bouldering cave. No matter your climbing ability, Keswick Climbing Wall has something to offer for everybody.

The Derwent Pencil Museum is a quaint museum, dedicated to the history of pencils, lead, and graphite mining in the Borrowdale Valley. There is a lovely interactive tour, as well as a fabulous shop, selling the famous Derwent Pencils brand. It’s an art lover’s dream!

A room where everything rolls uphill, one where you grow and shrink, seemingly by magic, and a room full of holograms! You’ll leave the Puzzling Place with your eyes confused and your brain befuddled. The exhibits are spaced across several galleries, up the stairs in Museum Square. Once you’ve finished in the museum, there’s more fun to be had in the shop, where you can take home your favourite tricks and illusions.

Located on Station Road by Fitz Park, within walking distance from the town centre, is Keswick Museum, the home of Keswick’s history. The museum comprises over 20,000 objects relating to Keswick, as well as a fine art collection. Activities and talks are held regularly, and guided tours are available throughout the year.

The Alhambra Cinema is over 100 years old, and whilst it’s been refurbished, and technologically advanced since its inception, it still holds all the charm of the early 1900’s picture houses. You can choose to sit on the ground floor, or upstairs on the balcony, and there is a vast selection of sweets and beverages to choose from. The cinema is even licensed, so you can enjoy your movie in style with a glass of prosecco!

Based upon the shores of Derwentwater, the Theatre by the Lake has come a long way since the days it began as ‘the Blue Box’. Boasting a 400 seat Main House, and a 100 seat Studio, and with up to nine different shows being performed throughout the year, you can be sure you’ll find something to enjoy. The theatre also takes part in events throughout the year, and has hosted the likes of John Hurt and Eddie Izzard. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office in person, or on their website.
